Hi Guys!
I wanted to add an extra day of blogging for all of my readers and call this series my Wellness Wednesdays blogging to start off our 2017.
I have been really really excited to share with you all my experiece at We Care Spa last summer. I was preparing my blog for about 15 months so that’s why you’ll see this is not published in real time like most of my other posts. I did in fact write these posts each day I was at the spa- I’ve just been saving them to publish for you all at the perfect time. And I cannot think of a better month for some intensive wellness posts than January!
Can YOU?
Well then, let’s get started with We Care blog entry ONE, shall we!
So I totally feel like a little girl again on her first day of camp. I’m anxious about meeting people for the first time, trying something completely new, AND starving for an entire week!
I’m about to enter a wellness spa and I know NO ONE. I can’t help but feel nervous. Making friends is not my goal, but I’m hopeful that I won’t be alone in my challenging week and find some nice people to share my experiences with.
Arriving to We Care Spa I am immediately greeted by two receptionists. My first impression: charming. And the staff are so nice and relaxed. The resort is quaint and honestly, adorable. It reminds me of something out of the 1950’s. OK, so I can handle this. Even if I don’t make any friends, the staff are wonderful and I will be learning and taking notes every chance I get.
The “c” word is stressing me out a bit. I mean, I’ve never had a colonic. My girlfriend who recommended We Care swears by the place. She says colonics are no big deal. LOL. I may be too trusting, soon enough I shall discover for myself firsthand, what a colonic entails.
I’ve been following my pre-fast instructions for the past few days, eating only raw fruits and vegetables, avocados for protein and 2 tablespoons of olive oil at night. I’m totally HANGRY. Yes, an mixture of hungry and angry. My fiancé is probably SO relieved I’m outta the house while I’m doing my cleanse. Poor guy- when I’m hungry, lookout! After all of my workouts, my body constantly needs fuel and replenishment.
I booked my trip a month in advance- I got extremely lucky and We Care had one spot available. Actually, I was originally scheduled to come for 6 days and 5 nights, but they had a cancellation so I got to sneak in for their 8 day and 7 night cleanse program. Usually, you need to make a reservation at least three months in advance. I’m so happy I got in. Gosh did I need this!
My resort category room is nothing fancy. But it’s clean, cool and perfect for what I need. I even have a lounge and private patio to sit outside at night and take in the warm desert air, ahhhh! You guys all know how I LOVE the heat! Crazy me I know. We Care does have higher room categories incase you want something a bit fancier- but if you’re looking to stay on budget, just know that rumor has it even Matthew McConnaughy stays in my “resort” category room each time he visits. So it mustn’t be all that bad :).
The moment you’ve all been waiting for… yes, the first treatment I have immediately following my arrival is a colonic. I unpack and sheepishly head over to the lobby to meet my therapist, Liz. A darling lady from Mexico City, we chat about Mexico and how much I love it down there (as we all know I was Mexican in my last life). Liz made me feel comfortable as could be. Super clean and organized, I felt safe to begin.
I’m not going to lie- you definitely experience some discomfort and tummy cramping during your colonic. Without going into TMI gruesome details, you can imagine it’s a bit of a shock to your body. My description of the process? You basically have filtered, warm water inserted to your colon to flush out all the toxins and food that’s stuck in there. You can even watch as you release these toxins. Yes, I know it sounds gross. But seriously, I was surprised because it really wasn’t. I don’t think I’ll convince anyone- this one you definitely need to experience on your own!
Let’s omit some details and flash forward to my orientation meeting after the colonic. Slightly overwhelmed by all of the herbal supplements and drink concoctions, by the end of orientation I totally knew what I was doing and felt at ease.
The herbal teas, supplements, soup and juice bar is communal. Everyone grabs their drinks in their bathrobes or most casual clothes.
This to me is the best part about being here. NO makeup, NO worries about having a bad hair day and NO need to worry about what you’re going to wear. Totally chill, natural and relaxing. Such a nice treat away from society’s daily judgements. Here you feel like all those judgments disappear. And let’s face it, just staring at the juices and teas makes me feel cleansed and healthy before I begin drinking them!
Ok, so I wanted to try We Care for several reasons. First, to bring you guys an interesting wellness find that you may want to try at some point. Second, to cleanse my own body and reap the benefits. Using my body full time as a dancer and fitness instructor, I felt I could surely use the detoxification and rest. And last but not least, I’m excited to take all of the great wellness classes We Care offers. Classes from healthy cooking and organization to kefir demonstrations to the moon and your health… I can’t wait to bring you guys the scoop from all of this wellness and how you can fit all of this extremely healthy information into your daily mode de vie!
Did I mention my reward for this week of tortuous starvation, cleansing and colonics? Ha ha, okay, it’s really not going to be that bad, I HOPE. So each day, I’ve booked myself one treatment. Whether it be a massage or facial, body scrub or reflexology, I am really hoping my body energizes and rejuvenates so that when I get back to San Diego, I’ll be healthier and more positive than ever for my clients, friends and family!
What do you guys think so far? Am I crazy? Sane? Has anyone ever done a cleanse or fast like this before? Do tell!
xx Shanna
